Location and history
Obereisenheim is a district of the municipality of Eisenheim in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria. The place lies directly on the Main, at the start of the Volkacher Mainschleife, near the transition to the districts of Kitzingen and Schweinfurt. The settlement was first mentioned in 788 as Isanesheim in a deed of donation to the Fulda monastery. Up to its merger with Untereisenheim on 1 May 1978, Obereisenheim was an independent market town.
Vine growing and wine sites
Obereisenheim belongs to the Franconian wine-growing region. The wine site Höll extends above the village towards the Main and includes steep vineyards oriented to the south-east. For the vineyards around Eisenheim, shell limestone and Lettenkeuper are cited as the characteristic soils; the Obereisenheimer Höll is assigned to shell limestone.
Grape varieties and wine style
In Obereisenheim, among others, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Perle, Morio Muskat, Kerner, Ortega, Schwarzburgunder and Acolon are grown. Silvaner is also historically linked to the place: On 5 April 1659, 25 Silvaner vines were transferred from Obereisenheim to Castell. From the Obereisenheimer Höll, both dry and semi-dry white and red wines are documented.
