Location on the Main
Mainstockheim is a municipality in the western district of Kitzingen. It lies directly on the Main in the Main Triangle in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and belongs to the region Franconia.
Landscape and soils
The municipal area includes a Main floodplain and hillside vineyards. From the vineyards, the view extends towards the heights of the Steigerwald. In Mainstockheim, loess soils are documented; in addition, from about 1850 up to the 1950s, tunnels for extracting limestone were driven into the hillsides.
Winegrowing with a long history
Winegrowing in Mainstockheim is connected with the Benedictine foundation in the nearby town of Kitzingen and with Ebrach Abbey. Ebrach Abbey established a vineyard estate there in 1136. The first documented mention of Mainstockheim dates from 1140 and is associated with Ebrach’s acquisition of the place. The Ebrach land register from 1340 also records 82 acres of leased vineyards.
Mainstockheim Hofstück
Since 1971, the cultivated area of vineyards within the Mainstockheim cadastral district has been known as Mainstockheim Hofstück. The grape varieties associated with the wines include Silvaner, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau and Scheurebe. Historically, numerous vineyard and field names have been handed down, including Am Hofstück, Mühlberg, Katzenkopf, Sonnenberg and Haselberg.
