Location and landscape
Korb is a municipality in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg. It lies on the north-eastern edge of the Waiblingen basin between the Remstal and the Berglen. The municipal area includes the Korber Kopf, which is 456.68 metres high, and the Kleinheppacher Kopf, which is about 440 metres high.
Vine growing in Korb
Korb is an old wine-growing municipality on the sunny side of the Remstal and on the western foothills of the Buocher Höhe. The wine-growing landscape includes, among other sites, the locations Sommerhalde, Berg, Hörnle and Steingrüble. For wine growing in the Kleinheppach area, archaeological evidence has been documented of a beam wine press and grape pomace from the 14th century.
Sites and grape varieties
The steep Korber Berg is divided into an upper and a lower area. There, among other varieties, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Lemberger, Viognier, Spätburgunder, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown. The Sommerhalde is planted with Lemberger, Spätburgunder, Zweigelt and Riesling; at the adjacent Steinreinacher Hörnle, Trollinger is documented.
Soil and climate
In the upper Korber Berg, light shell limestone is described, while the lower area is characterised by nutrient-rich Keuper soils as well as marl and clay. The Sommerhalde has stuben sand limestone. Topographic heat is collected in both sites during summer; on the west-facing Korber Berg, drying westerly winds after rainfall additionally provide special conditions.
