Location and municipality
Ippesheim lies on the south-western edge of the Steigerwald in Middle Franconia, around 40 kilometres south-east of Würzburg. The municipality comprises the districts of Ippesheim, Bullenheim and Herrnberchtheim and belongs to the wine region Franconia.
Viticulture and vineyards
With more than 100 hectares of vineyard area, Ippesheim is the largest wine-growing municipality in Middle Franconia. Around 60 per cent of the vineyard area accounts for the roughly 65 hectares of the Bullenheimer Paradies vineyard in Bullenheim on the Bullenheimer Berg. It is considered the largest single vineyard in Middle Franconia.
The roughly 45-hectare Ippesheimer Herrschaftsberg preserves historically developed, not consolidated parcels. The vineyards are characterised by meadows, woodland, hedges and fruit trees.
Soils and wine style
The vineyard sites are on nutrient-rich gypsum Keuper soils. The winegrowing association describes wines from the southern Steigerwald as expressive, extract-rich, powerful and mineral; according to the municipality, the soils also give Ippesheim’s wines a fruity character.
Historical context
Viticulture in the municipality has been documented since the year 820. The vineyards Bullenheim–Paradies and Ippesheim–Herrschaftsberg belong in the wine paradise to the large-vineyard area Frankenberger Schloßstück.
