Location and classification
The Herrschaftsberg is an officially registered single-vineyard site in Ippesheim in the Franconian wine paradise. The vineyard site belongs to the landscape on the south-western foothills of the Steigerwald and to the wine-growing region Franken.
Area and soils
The vineyard area of the Ippesheimer Herrschaftsberg comprises about 45 hectares. The historically developed, small-scale parcels are interspersed with meadows, woodland, hedges and fruit trees. No land consolidation has taken place. The vines grow on nutrient-rich Gipskeuper soils.
Grape varieties and wine style
In the vineyard parcels around the Ippesheimer Herrschaftsberg, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner and Faberrebe are documented. For wines from the Franconian wine paradise, these soils are described as giving expressive, extract-rich, powerful and mineral character.
History and wine law
Vine growing in the vicinity of Ippesheim has been documented since the year 820. The legally registered designation is Einzellage Herrschaftsberg with Ippesheim as the associated municipality; the site belongs to the Großlage Frankenberger Schloßstück within the Franconian wine paradise area.
