Location and landscape
Illingen is a municipality in the Enz district (Enzkreis) in Baden-Württemberg. It lies on the southern slope of the Stromberg and belongs to the Stromberg–Heuchelberg Nature Park. The municipal area includes valley meadows with orchards, forested heights, as well as vineyards on higher slopes.
Viticulture
Viticulture is carried out in Illingen and in the district of Schützingen. Illingen and Schützingen belong to the wine-growing region Württemberg. Among the documented vineyard sites is the Forstgrube; the Schützingen Heiligenberg is associated with Riesling.
Wines and grape varieties
White, rosé and red wines, as well as secco and German sparkling wine (Sekt), are offered from Illingen-Schützingen. Grape varieties grown include, among others, Lemberger, Spätburgunder, Trollinger, Riesling, Silvaner, Rivaner and Weißburgunder. For a Riesling from the Schützingen Heiligenberg, maceration on the skins, controlled fermentation and longer contact with the yeast are stated.
History
The founding of Illingen is dated to the year 766, when the town was mentioned for the first time in a document in connection with Lorsch Abbey (Kloster Lorsch). In the Middle Ages, Illingen was connected with the nearby Maulbronn Abbey (Kloster Maulbronn).
