Location and local structure
Bruttig-Fankel consists of the formerly independent Mosel villages of Bruttig and Fankel. The municipality is located on the right bank of the Moselle between Cochem and Beilstein in the Mosel meander of Moselkrampen, which is characterised by narrow bends in the river and steep slopes of vineyards. The village centres are situated on a gently sloping flat area on the Moselle side; on the surrounding steep slopes, the vineyards rise up. The region lies in the Mosel wine-growing area.
Viticulture and grape varieties
The vineyards of Bruttig-Fankel are cultivated as steep-slope vineyards. These include, among others, Götterlay, Kapellenberg, Layenberg, Pfarrgarten, Rathausberg and Rosenberg; in addition, Martinsborn is also listed as a local wine-growing site. Riesling is the most important grape variety of the steep-slope vineyards. On the slope vineyards immediately behind the settlements, Elbling is widespread; alongside this, red wine is produced to a limited extent.
Vine-growing sites in the growing region
In the 2024 wine-growing sites register Rhineland-Palatinate, the site Götterlay in the cadastral districts of Bruttig and Fankel is assigned to the large site Goldbäumchen in the area of Burg Cochem. Kapellenberg, Layenberg, Rathausberg, Rosenberg and Pfarrgarten belong there to the large site Rosenhang in the area of Burg Cochem.
History
Bruttig was first mentioned in documents in the year 898, Fankel at about 1100. Both settlements are locally traced back to Celtic-Roman origins. An archaeological path runs along an old connection between Roman long-distance roads. In 1969, Bruttig and Fankel were merged to form the municipality of Bruttig-Fankel.
