Location and Name
Götterlay is a vineyard site in Bruttig-Fankel in the Mosel wine-growing region. The official designation is “Bruttiger Götterlay”. The site is listed in the Rhineland-Palatinate vineyard sites register for the 2024 vintage under Bruttig-Fankel.
Topography and Soils
The historical wine-growing landscape features slopes with more than 60 per cent inclination and an orientation from east to south-east. The soils consist of shallow to medium-depth, weathered slate soils with numerous slate fragments.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Riesling is grown in Bruttiger Götterlay. The site is documented as being suitable for fruity, vibrant Riesling wines.
Name and Viticulture
The name element “Lay” denotes a rock or a rocky slope. “Götterlay” conveys the traditional notion of wines that could be served to the gods. A road created during land consolidation and a subsequent footpath made it possible to cultivate some previously abandoned plots again. Individual dry-stone walls are built in an arc shape.
