Location and landscape
The Rosenberg, also known as Fankeler Rosenberg, is located in the municipality of Bruttig-Fankel on the Moselle. Between Bruttig-Fankel and Beilstein, the vineyard site stretches directly along the Moselle bank. The distinctive south-south-westerly slope has a gradient of more than 60 per cent.
Soil and cultivation
The deep, heavy weathered soil made of greywacke contains a material that is rich in quartz and/or quartzite, and can absorb and store water. Historically, twelve terraces were created for cultivating the steep terrain, to give the vines more ground. A single-track rack railway supported the work; today only the upper terraces, which are difficult to access, are no longer fully cultivated.
Grape variety and wine style
At the Fankeler Rosenberg, Riesling is documented as the grape variety. The site produces powerful, full-bodied Riesling wines, including both dry and noble sweet versions.
Name and classification
The name Rosenberg goes back to an old German term for a projecting elevation and does not refer to roses or horses. In the 2024 vineyard register, Fankeler Rosenberg is listed as a single vineyard within the Großlage Rosenhang under vineyard number 440311; the planted vineyard area is 2.3 hectares. A landscape inventory records the total area as 6.3 hectares.
