Location and Classification
Kapellenberg is a registered single vineyard site in the Mosel wine-growing region, in the area of Burg Cochem and the Großlage Rosenhang. The site is assigned to the municipality of Bruttig-Fankel, with the districts Bruttig and Fankel, and lies behind both districts.
Soil and Viticulture
Kapellenberg is documented as a hillside site. For the site, reddish and grey slate are described, as well as deep, sandy loam soils for the Bruttiger Kapellenberg. Many old vineyards in Kapellenberg are planted with own-rooted vines.
Climate and Grape Varieties
In the Mosel wine-growing region, the average annual daily temperature is 9,7 °C, the average temperature during the growing season is 14,1 °C, and the average annual rainfall is 760 mm. Around 60 % of the rainfall falls during the growing season. For wines from Kapellenberg, Riesling and Kerner are documented; Riesling is also covered in wines with the designation Bruttiger Kapellenberg.
History and Wine Styles
The name Kapellenberg belongs to the historic vineyard names of the Mosel and is also preserved in connection with Fankel. A vineyard register from 1998 recorded a total of 36,5 hectares of planted vineyard area for the districts Bruttig and Fankel. Documented wines from Kapellenberg include Riesling Qualitätswein feinherb, Riesling Kabinett feinherb and Riesling Eiswein. In the vineyard directory, the site is listed under number 440307.
