Location and elevation profile
Bruchsal is located in Baden-Württemberg at the transition between the Upper Rhine Plain and the hills of the Kraichgau. The town is part of the wine-growing region Baden. The castle stands at an elevation of 121.1 metres, while the railway station and market square are at 114 metres. The highest point designated by the town is the approximately 268.8-metre-high Michaelsberg in Untergrombach.
Winegrowing in the landscape
On the slopes around the Michaelsberg in Untergrombach there are vineyards, orchards, terraces and dry-stone walls. Historically, viticulture shaped the town district located at the foot of the Michaelsberg. In addition, the municipal landscape documentation identifies vineyards on the slopes above Obergrombach and a wine site at the Altenberg.
Classification under wine law
The single site Weinhecke is assigned within the Stiftsberg area to the municipalities of Bruchsal and Ubstadt and is recorded as a cross-municipal single site. In 2024, four Bruchsal parcels were assigned in the vineyard plots directory for Weinhecke and in the larger area of Mannaberg.
Archaeological and agrarian-historical traces
On the Michaelsberg, remains of a Stone Age settlement were discovered in the late 19th century. The discovery site gave the archaeological Michaelsberg culture its name. Municipal archives document for Untergrombach and Obergrombach, among other things, measures against phylloxera, vine pruning and grafting, frost damage, new plantings, and the historic Burgweinberg cooperative for winemaking.
