Altenberg

Location

The Altenberg is a vineyard site in Heidelsheim, a district of Bruchsal in the Baden wine region in Germany. The vineyard site lies to the north of Heidelsheim.

Viticulture

On the Altenberg, Ruländer was planted on a large scale in 1941 and 1942. From the 1960s onwards, the designation “Heidelsheimer Altenberg” was used for Ruländer wines.

History

The area of the Altenberg was already settled in the Stone Age. At its foot, remains of a Roman manor house were found. Shortly after the Second World War, new vineyards were established; when they were laid out, the soil was broken up deeply, revealing remains of a prehistoric fortification.

Vineyard educational trail

A vineyard educational trail crosses the vineyard site and begins near the Heidelsheim North rail stop. It is used for guided tours, which include tastings of the grape varieties grown on the Altenberg.
