Location and landscape
Bißersheim lies in the Eckbachtal valley, in the catchment area of the Pfalz region and the German Wine Route. The municipality is shaped by vineyard landscapes. The vineyard sites are exposed to the sun; the Bissersheimer Goldberg slopes down to the south as a south-facing hillside.
Vineyard sites and soils
The officially registered single vineyard sites of the municipality include Goldberg, Held, Orlenberg and Steig. They belong to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Schwarzerde. The Goldberg has very loamy, calcareous soils.
Cultivation areas and grape varieties
In the vineyard register, for the 2024 vintage, 44.9 hectares were planted in the Goldberg, 61.2 hectares in the Held, 27.2 hectares in the Orlenberg and 47.2 hectares in the Steig. According to the Mussler winery, the south-facing slope of the Goldberg is particularly beneficial for Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There, the winery produces, among other things, a Pinot Noir referred to as Bissersheimer Goldberg.
Wine-growing tradition
The Mussler winery was founded in 1831 by Johann Jacob Mußler in Bißersheim and, according to the municipality, is run in the fourth generation. The vineyards are farmed with intensive and sustainable care; the harvest is done by hand.
