Location and classification
Goldberg is an officially registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Bißersheim in the Pfalz. It belongs to the Großlage Schwarzerde in the area of Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße. The vineyard area register for 2024 records a planted area of 44.9 hectares.
Relief and soils
The site is described as a long, sloping, falling hillside with a south to south-westerly exposure. A documented Chardonnay parcel is located at around 175 metres above sea level and is strongly oriented to the south. The soils consist of weathered limestone material; locally, there is a layer of Schwarzerde and limestone scree over solid, slabby limestone. For another Goldberg parcel, calcareous marl loam over thick limestone is described.
Grape varieties and viticulture
Goldberg has the following grape varieties documented: Riesling, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay. The Riesling from the 2021 vintage came from an average of 40-year-old vines, was produced with reduced yields and was hand-picked in several passes. A Chardonnay parcel planted in 1996 was also hand-picked into small harvesting crates; the stated yield was 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Wine styles and maturation
The documented Goldberg Riesling is dry, mineral, full-bodied and characterised by lively acidity. It fermented spontaneously in one-hundred-year-old wooden barrels and remained on full lees for ten months. A Goldberg Spätburgunder was described as a dry Qualitätswein. The documented Chardonnay received, among other things, maceration on the skins, whole-cluster pressing and must fermentation, fermented spontaneously in 225-litre barriques, underwent spontaneous biological acid reduction and matured on fine lees.
