Winery in the Pfalz
The Weingut Mussler is located in Bißersheim in the Pfalz. Johann Jacob Mussler established the family’s wine-growing tradition in 1831. Tobias Mussler took over the running of the winery in 1999; after his death in 2016, Sabine Mussler continued to manage the business.
Vineyard areas and vineyards
Following the expansion under Tobias Mussler, the cultivated area is around 55 hectares. For the site wines, the winery works with precisely defined vineyard plots. The described sites include the south-facing Bissersheimer Goldberg with very loamy, calcareous soils, the Laumersheimer Steinbuckel shaped by limestone, and the Kirchheimer Steinacker with loam, clay and marl over limestone. The Steinacker also has a cool microclimate and soil layers that store water.
Cultivation and maturation
Work in the vineyards includes intensive manual labour, mechanical soil cultivation, low yields and selective hand-harvesting. In addition, it is farmed without herbicides, foliage is removed to improve aeration, and the yield is partly reduced. The wines are fermented spontaneously. Sparkling wines mature in stainless steel, and red wines in new and used barriques.
Wines and focus
The range is divided into estate wines, regional wines, village wines and site wines, and includes dry, delicately off-dry and sweet wines, as well as white, rosé and red wines. Represented among others are Riesling, Weißer Burgunder, Grauer Burgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Spätburgunder, Merlot and Syrah. The site wines are intended to express the character of their respective vineyard site. The winery is FAIR’N GREEN-certified; its sustainability efforts include viticulture, cellar work, society and the value-creation chain.
