Location and History
Champagne Suenen is based in Cramant in the Champagne region in France. The family estate was founded in 1905. Following his father's death, Aurélien Suenen took over the running of the business in 2009.
Vineyard Areas and Farming
The estate cultivates around five hectares of vineyard. The plots are located in the Côte des Blancs, including in Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, as well as in Montigny-sur-Vesle and in the Massif de Saint-Thierry. Descriptions of the winery cite viticulture oriented towards more natural methods, with the resumption of earlier practices and without the use of herbicides.
Grape Varieties and Champagne
In the Côte des Blancs, Chardonnay is grown, while in the sites associated with the Massif de Saint-Thierry and the Vallée de la Vesle, Pinot Meunier is cultivated. The range includes Blanc-de-Blancs Champagnes, including the Oiry Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut made from 100 per cent Chardonnay, as well as the C+C Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut from Cramant and Chouilly. Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry may use the Grand Cru designation in accordance with the regulations of Champagne. The Côte des Blancs is characterised by a chalky subsoil, whose porous limestone can store water and at the same time drain it.
Aging Selected Cuvées
For a documented Oiry bottling with a vintage base of 2021, 60 per cent of the vins clairs were aged in stainless steel, with the remainder aged in older wood. It contained 45 per cent reserve wines, was disgorged in November 2024 and topped with a dosage of 4 grams per litre. A previous Oiry cuvée fermented in stainless steel and went through malolactic fermentation; it was bottled without fining or filtration, rested on the lees for at least 42 months and received a dosage of 2 grams per litre.
