Geography and Climate
France comprises, in its European mainland, around 551,500 km² and has about 3,500 kilometres of coastline on the North Sea, the English Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The country connects coasts, lowlands, hills and mountain ranges; rivers and mountain chains form natural boundaries. The climate is predominantly temperate, with oceanic conditions in the west, continental influences in the middle and in the east, Mediterranean conditions in the south-east, and mountain climate at higher elevations.
Vine-Growing Regions and Grape Varieties
French wine-growing is found, among other places, in Burgundy, Jura, South West France, along the Loire, on the Rhône, in Champagne, in Bordeaux and in the Alsace. The vineyard areas include different soils such as marl-limestone, gravel, chalk and slate. In France, around 50 major grape varieties are grown, including Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carignan, Pinot Noir and Gamay Noir, as well as Ugni Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chenin Blanc and Colombard.
Production and Forms of Operation
In 2024, France produced 36.1 million hectolitres of wine without industrial uses. Of this, 15.0 million hectolitres went to AOP/AOC wine, 10.6 million to IGP wine and 1.7 million to Vin de France. Production takes place in private wine estates and cooperatives. 560 cooperatives, without Cognac, processed more than 46 per cent of the wine volumes; in addition, there were about 700 négociant houses. 21 per cent of profitable vineyard land was farmed organically, spread across 12,075 organic wine-growing operations.
Protected Designations of Origin and Wine Law
The first official French Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée were introduced by decree on 15 May 1936. The French AOC is the national level of recognition for a designation, which can then be registered as a European AOP; wine products may continue to bear the AOC designation. AOP requirements regulate, in legally approved specifications, the delimited geographical area, production conditions and controls. Compliance is checked by independent bodies approved by the INAO. For planting, replanting or grafting vines, prior planting authorisation is required.
