Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 Armand Rousseau

The vineyard Chambertin

Location and Terroir

Chambertin is a Grand Cru site in the municipality of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits in the French Burgundy. The vineyard lies on an east-facing slope at a height of around 240 to 280 metres.

The upper slope sections have shallow, sometimes alluvial, sometimes brown soils formed from slope debris. In the lower area, clayey-limestone soils are found. The rock of the upper slope is Bathonian, while the lower marls and limestones come from the Jurassic and Bajocian.

Cultivation and Appellation Rules

The appellation comprises 13.14 hectares of vineyard area. At least 9,000 vines per hectare are prescribed, a row spacing of at most 1.25 metres and a spacing within the row of at least 0.50 metres. The short pruning and the simple Guyot training system are permitted, with at most eight fruiting buds per vine.

A permanent cover crop of the headlands is mandatory; irrigation is prohibited. The permitted yield is 42 hectolitres per hectare, with the maximum yield limit at 49 hectolitres per hectare.

Wine Character and Maturation

Chambertin is a French Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée for still red wine, produced mainly from Pinot Noir. Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are permitted as supplementary grape varieties and are limited together to 15 percent per parcel. The designation on the label must carry the addition “Grand Cru”.

The wines are described as deeply coloured, full-bodied and complex, with firm tannins that are at the same time velvety. Their aromatic spectrum may include red and black fruits, liquorice, spices, violets and undergrowth. The maturation must last at least until 15 June of the year following the harvest; the temperature of the vessels may not exceed 25 °C.

History

The name Chambertin has been documented since the 13th century. The boundaries of the vineyard are considered to have remained unchanged since the Middle Ages. The Chambertin Grand Cru appellation was officially established on 31 July 1937.

About the winery

Location and Terroir

The Domaine Armand Rousseau is based in Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, France. Its vineyards are located in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis on the Côte de Nuits. The parcels on slopes with predominantly easterly or south-easterly exposure sit on clay and limestone soils, which are in part characterised by gravel, marl, limestone and calcareous clay.

Vineyard Area and Wines

The estate farms 15.33 hectares, of which 3 hectares in village appellations, 3.77 hectares in Premier Cru and 8.51 hectares in Grand Cru appellations. Pinot Noir is at the heart of the range. The portfolio includes, among others, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazy-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.

The wines are intended to express the distinctive character of the individual climats. The Domaine attributes differences between the wines to the respective climat and the vintage.

Vine Cultivation and Cellar Work

In the vineyards, the simple Guyot training system is applied throughout. Traditional farming practises include yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. To develop a more biologically oriented way of working, among other things green pruning, work on the foliage and mechanical tillage have been introduced without insecticides or chemical additives. A Chambertin parcel is worked with horse and plough because its layout is unsuitable for machines.

The vinification is carried out traditionally with as few interventions as possible and close monitoring of the fermentation phases. According to the Domaine, these methods have changed very little since the first vintages.

History

Armand Rousseau founded the Domaine at the beginning of the 20th century from inherited vineyard parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin. Through his marriage in 1909, the holdings were expanded; at the same time, cellar and pressing buildings were added. Initially, he sold wine to regional négociants as barrel goods; later, among other things, he acquired parcels in Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche and Chambertin and began bottling selected crus for restaurants and private customers.

Charles Rousseau joined the family business in 1945 and took it over after Armand Rousseau’s death in 1959. Eric Rousseau joined in 1982, and Cyrielle Rousseau returned to the Domaine on a permanent basis in 2014.
