Location and History
Champagne Douard is located in La Chapelle-Monthodon in the Marne Valley in the Champagne region of France. The first vines were planted in the 1960s by Jean Douard, the founder’s grandfather. Around 20 years later, Christian and Marie-Christine Douard began selling bottles under the name Champagne Douard Christian.
Vineyards and Grape Varieties
The estate manages a little more than 4.5 hectares, planted mostly with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The average age of the vines is more than 35 years. The vineyards are farmed according to the HVE 3 and Viticulture Durable en Champagne standards; the work is described as sustainable or considerate viticulture. The soils of the vineyards for the most recent cuvée and the Vieilles-Vignes-Cuvée are clay-limestone.
Cellar and Production
Champagne Douard has its own cellar facilities to carry out the production of the Champagne on the estate and to control the fermentations. The most recent cuvée undergoes biological acid breakdown in the wine and not in the must, is assembled from two vintages, and is stored in the cellar for at least four years.
Cuvées
The range includes the styles Tradition, Prestige and Blanc de Blancs. The Vieilles-Vignes-Cuvée is made up of 90 percent Pinot Meunier and 10 percent Pinot Noir. The Comité Champagne directory has listed Tradition and Prestige Champagnes since 1960, as well as Blanc de Blancs since 2007.
