Origin and History
Champagne Deutz is based in the city of Aÿ in the Champagne region in France. William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, both from Aachen, founded the house in 1838 in Aÿ. Originally it operated under the name Deutz & Geldermann; the Champagne house and the Geldermann sparkling wine business were later separated. The historic head office in the Rue Jeanson was developed by William Deutz in 1861.
Cellar Facilities
Deutz’s cellars extend beneath the slopes of Aÿ. They comprise 20 galleries across two levels; the longest reaches about 65 metres under the slopes. The facility was excavated between 1887 and 1892, extended in 2011, and provides space for up to ten million bottles.
Vineyards and Harvest
Deutz processes grapes from Aÿ and from selected sites in Champagne, including the estate parcel of Meurtet in Aÿ. For the 2022 harvest, the grapes were hand-picked over more than twelve days. The picking dates were determined by the phenolic ripeness and fruit development of the individual parcels; sorting was not necessary due to the excellent health of the grapes.
Cuvées and Maturation
The range includes, among others, Brut and Brut Rosé with no vintage, vintage Brut and -Rosé, Blanc de Blancs, William Deutz, Amour de Deutz, as well as the single-vineyard wines Hommage à William Deutz. Brut Rosé combines Pinot Noir from Aÿ with Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Amour de Deutz is a Blanc de Blancs made from 100 % Chardonnay; Hommage à William Deutz Meurtet is a Blanc de Noirs labelled as a Champagne Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée made from 100 % Pinot Noir from the Meurtet parcel. The still wines and reserve wines are blended from separately vinified lots after alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, after which the wines mature on the lees. Prestige cuvées are created only in selected outstanding vintages.
