Location and Classification
The Wohlfahrtsberg is a single vineyard site in the municipality of Löwenstein in the wine-growing region of Württemberg. The steep vineyards lie on the slopes of the Löwenstein hills above the Sulm valley and extend to about 380 metres. The name is already documented on a historic cadastral map of Löwenstein from the year 1834.
Wine-Law Classification and Site
The Wohlfahrtsberg was previously linked to the Großlage Salzberg. In 2024, the competent authority initiated the renaming of this Großlage to Breitenauer See and subsequently announced it; the Wohlfahrtsberg remains a single vineyard site in Löwenstein. For the site, a mild climate, comparatively high rainfall and evening winds influenced by the nearby Breitenauer See are described.
Soils and Grape Varieties
Soils of Gipskeuper and Untere Bunten Mergeln are documented. In individual parcels, marl and stub sandstone also occur, so that soil conditions vary within the site. At the Wohlfahrtsberg, among others, Lemberger, Riesling, Trollinger, Spätburgunder, Acolon, Weißburgunder, Silvaner and Cabernet Mitos are grown. The parcels are at different elevations and are cultivated according to the respective grape variety.
Wines and Cultivation
The site-specific examples include dry red wines, especially from Lemberger and Cabernet Mitos, as well as dry white wines from Weißburgunder and Silvaner. For a Cabernet Mitos from the Wohlfahrtsberg, late harvests, extended time on the skins and ageing in barriques are documented. The site wines of the Bihlmayer winery mature predominantly in barriques or tonneaux; some estate wines are aged in large wooden casks. Between the rows of vines, permanent sward provides a habitat for beneficial organisms and is intended to reduce the use of plant protection products.
