Location and landscape
Löwenstein lies in the Upper Sulm valley and in the Löwenstein hills in the northern part of the Naturpark Schwäbisch-Fränkischer Wald. The town is situated on a mountain spur above the Weinsberg valley. The municipal area extends from about 220 to 550 metres in elevation; steep slopes and deeply incised valleys characterise the surrounding area.
Geology and winegrowing
The winegrowing sites are shaped by a sunny climate, heavy Keuper soils and coloured marl. The geological subsoil ranges from the Gipskeuper to layers of the Lower Jurassic. Winegrowing is one of the traditional main occupations in Löwenstein.
Sites
The individual sites associated with Löwenstein include Dieblesberg, Sommerberg and Wohlfahrtsberg. Sommerberg is assigned to the large-site area of Schozachtal.
History
The Counts of Calw had a castle built in Löwenstein around 1080 to 1090; in 1123 the settlement was mentioned in writing for the first time. In November 1287, King Rudolf of Habsburg granted Löwenstein town rights based on those of Weinsberg.
