Topography and soils

The vineyard faces south to south-west, lies at an altitude of around 230 to 290 metres, and has a slope gradient of roughly 45 per cent. The geological subsoil belongs to the Keuper and includes reed sandstone as well as stony marl soils.

As classified grape varieties, Riesling and Lemberger are listed. Riesling is the most important grape variety of the site; wines made from Traminer and Lemberger are also documented. These include dry Riesling as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, a dry Traminer and a dry Lemberger.

Cultivation and ageing

According to the technical description, the stony Keuper marl allows natural yields of around 40 hectolitres per hectare without any additional yield reduction. SÜSSMUND has been known, according to the winery, as its monopole site for around 400 years. For the wines, spontaneous fermentations are documented among other things: for the 2021 Riesling GG in a stainless-steel tank, for the 2019 Riesling GG in a 15-hectolitre wooden cask with subsequent yeast ageing, and for the 2022 Traminer with a three-week maceration time and ageing in used 300-litre barrels.
