Location and urban area
Großbottwar is a town in the district of Ludwigsburg, in the Stuttgart administrative region, in Baden-Württemberg. It belongs to the region Württemberg. The urban area covers 2,551 hectares and consists of the districts Großbottwar, Winzerhausen as well as Hof and Lembach.
Landscape and geology
The historic settlement developed at the confluence of Bottwar and Kleiner Bottwar. The municipal area extends from about 215 metres above sea level on the Bottwar to 394 metres at the Wunnenstein; the town centre lies at approximately 216 metres. For a planning area in Großbottwar, the hydrogeological units Gipskeuper and Unterkeuper are designated.
Viticulture
Within the urban area, there are around 220 hectares of vineyards. The vineyard designation “Gross-Bottwarer Harzberg” is listed as a named site in the federal legal annex for land valuation. The Harzberg is therefore a documented vineyard designation for Großbottwar.
History and vineyard site Lichtenberg
The Bottwar settlement was first mentioned in documents in 779. The town was founded in the middle of the 13th century under the lords of Lichtenberg. Winzerhausen and Hof and Lembach were incorporated into Großbottwar on 1 December 1971. For the Lichtenberg, a Großbottwar Riesling is documented as a quality wine b.A. with a semi-dry flavour profile. The 2022 vintage has 11.5 per cent alcohol, 16.7 grams per litre residual sugar and 7.1 grams per litre total acidity; the product sheet describes it as light, moderately alcohol-rich, and characterised by an interplay of sweetness and acidity.
