Steinroßel

Location and landscape

Steinroßel is a vineyard site in the municipality and in the winegrowing region Sommerloch in the Nahe. The south-facing vineyard plots lie at an altitude of 250 to 280 metres, on a slope of around 30 percent.

Soil and cultivation

The soil is described as red slate in connection with the Rotliegend. In the Riesling plots, sandstone and weathered red slate material are also found. The vines must put down deep roots into the comparatively poor soil in order to draw sufficient summer water. The officially planted area covers 14.0 hectares.

Grape varieties and wine style

Riesling is the grape variety classified for Sommerlocher Steinroßel. The wines are described as finely structured and mineral, with harmoniously lively acidity; fruit and aromatics can vary from vintage to vintage. Both dry Rieslings and a Riesling Beerenauslese are documented.

Classification and production

The VDP lists Sommerlocher Steinroßel as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with 8.78 hectares of classified area. For cultivation, earlier summer pruning and moderate leaf removal are documented. Single-site wines are produced in part with a short must-contact period and longer ageing on the lees; a documented Riesling was fermented spontaneously and matured in a stainless-steel tank.
