Location and landscape
Sommerloch is a municipality in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rüdesheim. The village is located near the Nahe valley at the edge of the Soonwald and is surrounded by vineyards. The landscape includes hillside sites and higher-lying vineyard areas; the Sonnenberg is described as a plateau above the village.
Vineyard sites and geology
The officially registered vineyard sites in the Sommerloch cadastral area include Birkenberg, Ratsgrund, Steinroßel and Sonnenberg. The 2024 vineyard directory records 19.2 hectares of vineyard area in Birkenberg, 29.6 hectares in Ratsgrund, 14.0 hectares in Steinroßel and 11.2 hectares in Sonnenberg.
The Sommerloch Steinroßel has red slate from the Rotliegend formation. The site, oriented to the south, lies at around 250 to 280 metres and has a slope gradient of roughly 30 percent.
Climate and wine style
The Nahe winegrowing region is considered mild and comparatively dry; the vineyards are shaped by gently undulating hills and sunny slopes. Riesling is designated as the classified grape variety for Steinroßel. The wines are described as finely structured and mineral, with balanced, lively acidity. Depending on the vintage, the Riesling can range from elegant to firmly acidity-driven and show fruity, aromatic notes.
Farming and vinification
A local winegrowing business documents certified organic cultivation, targeted sowing of flowering herbs, restrained farming practices and the use of fungus-resistant grape varieties. Thinning the shoots in early summer regulates yields and improves the microclimate of the leaf wall; moderate leaf removal in the grape zone increases exposure to sunlight and reduces pressure from fungal diseases.
The wines ripen partly for longer on full lees and are produced with as few pumping processes as possible. White wines ripen mostly in stainless steel, and maceration-fermented red wines for up to two years in small wooden barrels. Where treatments are required, plant-based agents are used; according to their own documentation, the wines are classified as suitable for a vegan diet.
