Location and categorisation

Birkenberg is a designated single-vineyard site in Sommerloch in the wine-growing region Nahe. The official vineyard register 2024 assigns the site to the Nahetal area and lists 19.2 hectares of planted vineyard land.

Topography and soil

A Sommerloch winemaker describes Birkenberg as a flat site. The soil is described as sand and gravel.

Grape varieties and wine styles

In Birkenberg, Müller-Thurgau is cultivated. As Sommerlocher Birkenberg, wines made from Grüner Veltliner, Bacchus and Sauvignon Blanc are also documented. Dry quality wine from Grüner Veltliner, as well as Kabinett and Spätlese wines are evidenced, along with a sweet Bacchus Kabinett.

Special production method

A Pétillant Naturel made from Grüner Veltliner from the Sommerlocher Birkenberg was stored on its lees for longer than twelve months, disgorged by hand, produced unfiltered and without added sulphur. It also contained a small proportion of Riesling from another site.
