Spitzelberg

Location and landscape

The Staffelbacher Spitzelberg is located in Staffelbach, a district of Oberhaid in Franconia. The vineyard site is at the western exit of the Bamberg Basin near the Main and the foothills of the Haßberge. It lies directly below the hill of the same name on south-facing slopes of the Main Valley.

Structure and cultivation

The vineyard parcels run across the slope and are interrupted on moderately inclined land by terraces and retaining walls. For the designation Staffelbacher Spitzlberg, around 2.083 hectares of vineyard area are documented. The intensively cultivated viticultural area lies in the context of the landscape protection area for the Main Valley slopes around Viereth-Trunstadt and Oberhaid.

Grape varieties and wines

At the Staffelbacher Spitzelberg, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Silvaner, Bacchus, Cabernet Sauvignon, Schwarzriesling, Acolon and Domina are planted. Documented varieties include dry Silvaner, dry Müller-Thurgau, fine-fruited Bacchus, dry Domina and fine-fruited Rotling. A red wine cuvée made from Acolon, Dornfelder and Domina was traditionally matured in barrique.

History

For Staffelbach, a wine-serving establishment has already been documented as early as 1338. The south slopes in the area around Oberhaid and Unterhaid were planted with vines by at least the 15th century. The name Staffelbacher Spitzelberg refers to the site immediately below the Spitzelberg hill. After the Second World War, viticulture in Staffelbach was gradually revived and, in the past few decades, has been cultivated more intensively.
