Staffelbach

Location and history

Staffelbach is a subdivision of the municipality of Oberhaid in the Bamberg district in Upper Franconia. The village lies in the Main Valley between Bamberg and the Haßberge Nature Park, at the western exit of the Bamberg basin. Staffelbach was first documented in the year 953.

Vine growing on the Spitzelberg

In Staffelbach, around two hectares of vineyard area are cultivated, in particular in the wine-growing site Staffelbacher Spitzelberg. The vineyards are located on the foothills of the Haßberge, which slope down towards the Main. Spitzelberg is listed in the Bavarian wine-growing sites directory for Oberhaid, the district of Staffelbach, in the Abt-Degen-Weintal area of the Franconian Qualitätsweinbaugebiet.

Grape varieties and wine style

For the designations Staffelbacher Spitzelberg and the neighbouring site Unterhaider Röthla, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner and Schwarzriesling are documented. A proven wine style from these sites is Rotling, a rosé wine made from red and white grapes.

Structures of the vineyards

The vineyard plots run across the slope and are partly divided into sections by terraces and retaining walls. Hedges, near-natural meadows and herb margins often border the vineyards. Parts of the older vineyard structures on the Spitzelberg and the neighbouring Kunkelsbühl, with terraces and dry-stone walls, lie within designated protected areas. Commercial wine growing in Staffelbach and the neighbouring Unterhaid was resumed in the second half of the 20th century following a decline.
