Location and classification
The legally designated single vineyard Sonnenberg extends across the communities of Sinzheim and Varnhalt. Varnhalt is a district of Baden-Baden. Sonnenberg is assigned to the Ortenau area in the wine-growing region Baden.
Topography and soils
A documented parcel of the Varnhalter Sonnenberg is oriented south-south-west and has deep loess clay loam soils. Another parcel below the Nägelsförst winery lies on a west-facing slope at around 250 metres above sea level; its soil contains arkosic sandstone as well as slate, phyllite and volcanic rock.
Grape varieties and wine styles
In Sonnenberg, Spätburgunder is documented. For a Beerenauslese from a parcel below the Nägelsförst winery, Frühburgunder is stated. Both dry Spätburgunder and a Beerenauslese produced from Frühburgunder are evidenced.
Vinification
A documented Spätburgunder from the Varnhalter Sonnenberg matured for 22 months in French barriques with a capacity of 225 litres and was bottled unfiltered.
