Schützenhütte

Location and classification

The Dolgesheimers’ Schützenhütte is an officially designated single vineyard in the cadastral district of Dolgesheim. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen in Rheinhessen. The official site number is 720506; according to the 2024 vineyard register, the vineyard area totals 75.9 hectares.

Soils

Within the site, calcareous marl clay is found as Pelosol, as well as loess-derived Pararendzina. The marl formed from calcareous deposits of the Tertiary sea and is deep-rooted, rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous, but shows limited permeability and aeration. The Pararendzina, formed from calcareous, Ice Age windblown dust, is described as deep, fertile, calcareous and well-suited to rooting.

Name and viticultural history

The name Schützenhütte refers to a hut as shelter, or to a fieldwarden’s hut. Viticulture in Dolgesheim is first documented in the year 789 AD; this historical information refers to the place and not to the age of the single vineyard.

Documented wines

From the Schützenhütte, wines with Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder and Huxelrebe are documented. A Spätburgunder is documented as a dry quality wine from Rheinhessen and matured for at least twelve months in small wooden casks. Documented wines from Chardonnay and Grauburgunder were matured in stainless steel. For the Dolgesheim vineyards of Seck’s winery, organic viticulture is also described without herbicides, organic nutrient and humus applications, the sowing of cover crops in every vine row, as well as gentle vine pruning, leaf work and bunch thinning.
