Dolgesheim

Location and Viticulture

Dolgesheim is a wine-growing municipality in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing region is considered a protected area and is among the warmest and driest wine-growing regions in Germany.

Vineyard Sites and Soils

The Dolgesheimer Kreuzberg lies west of the town towards Petersberg at about 165 to 210 metres above sea level. Its orientation turns from north to east. The single vineyard area of 77 hectares belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. Marl and loess soils characterise the site.

The Dolgesheimer Schützenhütte comprises 72 hectares and lies at about 140 to 203 metres above sea level. Its orientation turns from south to west. It also belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. Marl and loess soils are found there.

History of Viticulture

Dolgesheim was first mentioned in records on 5 November 769. Further entries from the years 782 to 805 mention arable land, vineyards and meadows. Viticulture is first evidenced for the year 789. The name Kreuzberg appears in 1501 as “am Crutzeberge” and goes back to an old field cross.

Development in the 20th Century

In 1910, a winemakers’ cooperative was founded in Dolgesheim. Land consolidation took place from 1965 to 1968: the Kreuzberg was worked in 1965 and 1966, followed by Wingertsberg in 1967 and 1968. In 1969, the cooperative built a modern winery press house with new machinery equipment.
