Topography and Soils
The name element “Hölle” is explained by a slight hillside slope. In the Gumbsheimer Schloßhölle, south-facing parcels are also documented. The soils include calcareous clay marl soils of the Mergel/Pelosol type, as well as black earth soils of the Löss/Tschernosem type formed from loess. The clay marl soils are deep, nutrient-rich and strongly calcareous, but they show restricted water management and aeration. The loess-derived black earth soils are rich in humus and well suited to rooting.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In the south-facing parcels of the Gumbsheimer Schloßhölle, the cultivation of Gewürztraminer is documented. The regional description links Schloßhölle with full-bodied, approachable wines in the Burgundian style, as well as with aromatic bouquet wines.
History of the Name
The name of the site has already been documented for the year 1835. The element “Schloß” is explained by the earlier connection of the hill to the castle of nearby Wöllstein.
