Gumbsheim

Location and landscape

Gumbsheim is a municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate and lies in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The surrounding area is characterised by gently rolling hilly landscapes with broad ridges, wide valleys and individual knolls. Steeper slopes and knolls are used for winegrowing.

Climate and soils

In Rheinhessen, the average annual temperature is about 9.9 °C, while the average temperature during the growing season is around 14.6 °C. Annual precipitation amounts to roughly 500 millimetres, of which about 65 percent falls during the growing season. The landscape was formed from uplifted marine deposits with limestone, marl, clay, gravel and sand, which were partly covered by loess.

Schloßhölle vineyard site

The Schloßhölle is a single vineyard site within the municipal area of Gumbsheim. Its soil profile includes marl and Pelosol as well as loess and Black Earth. The marl-Pelosol is described as deep, calcareous, rich in clay and rich in nutrients; loess and Black Earth are humus-rich and allow deep root penetration. The vineyard-site profile links the Schloßhölle to full-bodied wines, moderate acidity and a creamy texture, with aromas of mango, apricot and honeydew melon. The name of the site has been documented since 1835.

Historic megalith

In 1927, a prehistoric megalith (menhir) with a height of about 3.15 metres was found in Gumbsheim. It is protected as a cultural monument.
