Schloßberg

Location and Topography

The Zeller Schloßberg is located in Zell am Ebersberg in the Abt-Degen-Weintal wine-growing region in Franken. The 14.8-hectare vineyard site extends over a conical hill with a steep south-facing slope.

Soils and Grape Varieties

The Zeller Schloßberg is described as having Keuper and sandy soils; the steep southern part consists of pure Keuper. The site includes, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, White Elbling, Silvaner, Johanniter, Kerner, Perle, Rieslaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Ortega, Portugieser, Spätburgunder, Domina, Dornfelder, Schwarzriesling and Regent, as well as a mixed planting. The south-facing slope is associated with wines with a fruity bouquet.

History and Cultivation

The name of the vineyard site goes back to an earlier castle on the Little Ebersberg. Above the vineyards, remains of the castle complex are documented. Parcels measuring 701 and 978 square metres are very steep and are cultivated entirely by hand. One of the parcels was restored after a period of neglect; during this process, a largely collapsed vineyard wall was reconstructed by hand.

Documented Wine

A dry Old Franconian Field Blend from the 2014 vintage from a Zeller-Schloßberg parcel was produced without enrichment and without fining. The winery describes it as produced vegan.
