Zell am Ebersberg

Zell am Ebersberg

Zell am Ebersberg is a small wine-growing village and a municipal district of Knetzgau in the Steigerwald, in Franconia, in the Bavarian administrative region of Lower Franconia. The village lies in a region with a continental wine-growing climate, dry summers and cold winters.

Weinlage Zeller Schloßberg

The wine-growing site Schloßberg is associated with the Kleine Ebersberg and is named after an earlier castle, which is regarded as a shaping historical feature above Zell am Ebersberg. The single vineyard site facing south comprises 14.8 hectares and is not part of the Großlage Zeiler Kapellenberg.

Soils and grape varieties

At the Zeller Schloßberg, Keuper and sandy soils occur. Documented grape varieties include, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, White Elbling, Green Silvaner, Johanniter, Kerner, Perle, Rieslaner, Pinot Blanc, White Riesling, Ortega, Portugieser Blau, Pinot Spätburgunder, Domina, Dornfelder, Müllerrebe, also Schwarzriesling, and Regent, as well as mixed cultivation.

Vine growing on the hillside

The south-facing aspect is, in the regional description, associated with wines with a fruity bouquet. To protect against erosion, ground-cover plants and straw layers are used in the steep vineyards of the Abt-Degen wine valley.
