Location and classification
The Schloßberg lies directly beside the Hallburg estate at Hallburg in the municipality of Volkach. The vineyard is around two kilometres from Volkach, in the Franconian wine-growing region, within the Volkach Mainschleife. The official designation is “Volkach Hallburg Schloßberg”; the site is assigned to the MainSüden area without major region classification.
Climate and soils
The south-facing slope offers strong exposure to the sun. Forest and a historic stone wall protect the vineyard; the ripening conditions are described as almost Mediterranean. The subsoil consists of sedimentary rocks of the Lower Keuper. From this, a calcareous, nutrient-rich and water-retaining soil was formed.
Vines and wine style
Riesling, Silvaner and Spätburgunder grow on the Schloßberg. The winery produces a site-designated wine from the Hallburger Schloßberg. Riesling from this site is described as having a mineral character, associated with the Keuper soil and the warm ripening conditions.
History and cultivation
The Hallburg vineyard is documented for the year 1248 under the name “Haleberger Weinen”. The Counts of Schönborn acquired Hallburg and the estate in 1806; the Hallburg Schlossberg is in their sole possession. The estate initially worked in accordance with ecological guidelines, received organic certification from Abcert in 2018 and joined the Bioland association in the same year. For new plantings, propagation material is used from the estate’s own vines; the vineyards are not irrigated.
