Hallburg

Location and landscape

Hallburg is a municipal part of the town of Volkach in the district of Kitzingen in Franconia. The place lies south of Volkach on the wine island along the Volkach Main loop. The Hallburg area includes Hallburg Castle and an adjoining estate farm.

Vineyard sites and soils

The Hallburg Schlossberg lies elevated above the Volkach Main loop. The vineyards facing south are located close to the Main; the surrounding dry stone walls shape the microclimate described there. For the vineyards, Keuper weathering-derived soils and shell limestone are documented; for the Hallburg Riesling, Keuper weathering-derived soil is explicitly named.

Cultivation and grape varieties

The estate’s vineyards are farmed in accordance with ecological guidelines; the winery is affiliated with the Bioland association. Hallburg Schlossberg and Gaibacher Schlosspark are described as the estate’s sole property. The documented range of grape varieties includes Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder. For the Hallburg Riesling, selective hand harvest and low yields are given.

History and wine-making

Hallburg Castle is associated with the year 1230 in connection with the Counts of Castell. According to the available information, since 1806 it has been in the possession of the Counts of Schönborn. A documented Hallburg Riesling is a dry German quality wine with notes of citrus, kumquat, gooseberry and herbs. It is briefly filled into the vat, pressed gently, fermented at 17 °C in a stainless-steel tank, and matured on fine lees.
