Römerberg

Location and Terrain

The Römerberg is designated as the wine-growing site of Badenweiler Römerberg in Badenweiler. A marked path through the vineyard leads downhill to Niederweiler, a district of Müllheim. The slopes reach gradients of up to 45 percent and are fully south-facing.

Soils and Climate

Folded and uplifted rock layers form mineral-rich soils. Documented are marl, limestone, sandstone and conglomerate; the vineyard soils are described in particular as calcareous marl. The microclimate is considered comparatively cool, with high daytime temperatures and cool nights.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

For the Römerberg, Gutedel, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder are documented. Spätburgunder and Chardonnay also come from the Römerberg terraces. The white wines are described as finely structured and expressive, while Spätburgunder is described as slender and spicy. A documented Römerberg Gutedel is dry, dense, taut and mineral, with aromas of ripe apple, citrus fruit and pear.

History and Vinification

The name Römerberg is associated with the Roman settlement in Badenweiler; it is also reported that the Romans cultivated wine on the sunny slopes. The site is designated as a single vineyard in the Markgräflerland area of the Baden wine-growing region. For the Römerberg terraces, low yields and a strict selection of grapes are given. The documented Gutedel was hand-harvested, left briefly on the skins, pressed gently, fermented and matured for six months on full lees in a double cask.
