Location and landscape
Badenweiler lies on the west slope of the Blauen in the southern Black Forest and in the Weil Valley above the Klemmbach. The municipal area extends from around 336 metres above sea level on the Klemmbach to around 600 metres in the local districts of Lipburg and Sehringen and comprises 1,302 hectares. The town centre is located at approximately 422 metres.
Climate and winegrowing
Through the Burgundian Gate, Badenweiler receives warm air masses with a Mediterranean influence from the south-west. The Black Forest provides protection from cold winds and strong temperature fluctuations; around 1,700 hours of sunshine are given annually. The vineyards lie in the landscape of the Markgräflerland, a winegrowing region within the Baden growing area.
Römerberg
The Römerberg is a single-vineyard site near Badenweiler and Niederweiler in the Markgräflerland. The steep vineyard site, oriented to the south, is located in a side valley of the Black Forest. Descriptions mention a comparatively cool mesoclimate with high daytime temperatures and cool nights, as well as marl, limestone, sandstone and conglomerate rock.
History and wines
For Badenweiler, Roman settlement and a Roman bathing facility are documented. At the Römerberg, among other varieties, Gutedel, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder are grown. Documented wines from the site include dry wines with a mineral character; a Chardonnay was matured in French oak.
