Kreuzberg

Location and topography

The Kreuzberg is located in Marktheidenfeld in a wind-protected side valley of the Main, below the Marktheidenfeld Kreuzberg chapel. The south to south-westerly exposure is documented with a slope inclination of 20 to 45 per cent; a viticulture study cites around 30 to 50 per cent for the south-facing site.

Soil and cultivation

The vineyard is on shell limestone, more precisely on Lower Shell Limestone. The calcareous, shallow soil has an increased risk of drought stress and an increased active lime content. The vineyard areas belonging to the site comprise five hectares and are cultivated by the State Domain Cellar Würzburg.

Vine growing history

The current vineyard is the remaining part of what was once a larger wine-growing area in Marktheidenfeld. Most local vineyards were abandoned around the beginning of the 20th century, partly as a result of phylloxera. The wine project at the Marktheidenfeld Kreuzberg has been documented since 1977 and was reactivated in 2021 through cooperation between the town of Marktheidenfeld and the State Domain Cellar Würzburg.

Grape varieties and wines

Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are the most important grape varieties grown at the Marktheidenfeld Kreuzberg. Rieslaner is also produced from the grapes grown there. The State Domain Cellar describes the wines as fruity and full of character. The documented town wine is a dry Silvaner; the 2023 vintage was designated for bottling as Kabinett or as Qualitätswein of specified winegrowing regions. The wines are matured and finished by the State Domain Cellar Würzburg.
