Location on the Main
Marktheidenfeld lies in the Mainvier-eck in the Main-Spessart district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, directly on the Main. The town belongs to the region Franconia.
Kreuzberg vineyard
The Kreuzberg is the only vineyard of Marktheidenfeld. The south-facing location is at about 245 metres above sea level and has a gradient of around 30 to 50 per cent; for the documented trial, about 35 per cent was given. The land consolidation of the vineyard site has been in place since 1971.
As parent rock, Lower Muschelkalk has been documented. The loamy-clayey soil has a pH value of 7.4, a total carbonate content of 37 per cent, an active carbonate content of 6.4 per cent, a soil depth of less than 60 centimetres, more than 20 per cent stones and a low water-holding capacity.
Climate and cultivation
A site trial at the Kreuzberg recorded an annual mean temperature of 9.7 °C, about 1,932 hours of sunshine and annual precipitation of 681.6 millimetres. Trial series with Müller-Thurgau, the clone WÜ 12-4 and Regent are documented. A vine row with straw-mulching and another with autumn-winter green cover were managed; the bud break was four buds per square metre.
The vineyard is owned by the State Court Cellar Würzburg and is farmed by them.
Marktheidenfeld’s town wine
The Kreuzberg wine has been produced since 1977. The initiative is attributed to the Marktheidenfeld restaurateur Ernst Fleischmann; after a longer pause, the town wine was put back on sale again from 2021. The current town wine is a dry Silvaner from Franconia with a fruity note, marked as Franconian Quality Wine (QbA) and produced by the State Court Cellar Würzburg.
For the 2025 selection, several Silvaner variants were tasted in the historic cellar of the Würzburg Residence. The selected variant was then bottled as the current town wine.
