Location and Extent
Klostergarten is a single-vineyard site in the district of Schwabenheim an der Selz. It belongs to the wine-growing region of Bingen and to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz. The vineyard area covers around 80 hectares.
Topography and Soils
The wine site lies at an altitude of approximately 120 to 220 metres and has exposures ranging from south-west to south-east. Documented soils include loess-derived para-rendzina and calcareous rendzina. The para-rendzina is deep-rooting, calcareous, and features good water storage capacity available to plants as well as good root penetrability. The rendzina is shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and stony, well-aerated, and only limited in terms of root penetrability.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In Klostergarten, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder, Gewürztraminer and Pinot varieties are grown. The proportion of loess and para-rendzina is combined with fruity, fresh wines of moderate structure. The calcareous rendzina is responsible for mineral, chalky wines with balanced acidity and greater structural depth.
Name and Classification
The name refers to the former ownership by a monastery. The garden and the associated property originally belonged to the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. Klostergarten is listed as an officially recognised single-vineyard site near Schwabenheim an der Selz within the Großlage Kaiserpfalz.
