Schwabenheim an der Selz

Location and vineyard areas

Schwabenheim an der Selz lies in the lower Selz valley in Rheinhessen. The municipal area includes the vineyard sites Klostergarten on the Mainz Mountain, as well as Schloßberg on the Westerberg and Sonnenberg. In the vineyard directory for 2024, 85.2 hectares are listed for Schwabenheim’s Klostergarten, 78.8 hectares for the Sonnenberg and 30.1 hectares for the Schloßberg.

Soils and aspect

The three vineyards recorded as single vineyard sites belong to the Kaiserpfalz region, to the Bingen area and to the Schwabenheim cadastral district. Documented soil types are loess/pararendzina and limestone/rendzina. Loess forms deep-rooted, light loam with good water storage available to plants and good root penetration. Limestone-rendzina is shallow to medium-depth, very calcareous and stony.

The Klostergarten lies at around 120 to 220 metres above sea level and is oriented from south-west to south-east. The Schloßberg extends at roughly 120 to 226 metres in height with an eastern aspect. The Sonnenberg lies at about 120 to 220 metres above sea level; its aspect ranges from south-south-west to north-north-west.

Climate and wine profile

In the south-west-facing area Am Klostergarten, little cold air forms above the vines. The cold air that develops flows mostly away from the built-up area or along its edge. The area lies near the macroclimatic zone of the Rhine valley and outside a regional air-exchange corridor of the Selz valley.

The loess/pararendzina sites are associated with lighter, fresh wine profiles. On limestone-rendzina, more strongly structured, mineral and limestone-influenced profiles develop. In Schwabenheim, among others Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Spätburgunder and Dornfelder are documented; the wines are represented in all German quality categories.

Historical viticulture

Viticulture in Schwabenheim has been documented since 766, when a record of the place mentions the donation of two vineyards. The name Klostergarten refers to the historical connection with the abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. The Schloßberg borders on the Schloß Westerhaus estate.
