Schloßberg

Location and classification

The Schwabenheimer Schloßberg is located in the Schwabenheim district of Schwabenheim an der Selz in Rheinhessen and borders Schloss Westerhaus. A local hiking route leads uphill and downhill through the vineyard site and includes several viewpoints.

Soils

Löss over para-rendzina as well as limestone over rendzina are documented. The löss–para-rendzina soil is deep, calcareous and loamy, with a high capacity for storing water and good root penetration. The limestone–rendzina soil is shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and stony, with limited water storage and restricted root penetration.

Grape varieties

Early Burgundy, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Spätburgunder and Silvaner are planted in the Schloßberg. Morio Muskat is grown there on heavy soils.

Wine character and wine law

The löss–para-rendzina areas are associated with notes of yellow fruit as well as aromas of apple, peach, pear and citrus, moderate structure, gentle acidity and early drink maturity. The limestone–rendzina areas show citrus, apple, gooseberry, mango and passion fruit, as well as balanced acidity and a mineral, chalky profile. Schloßberg is classified as a single vineyard (Einzellage) within the Bingen area and in the Großlage Kaiserpfalz. In the vineyard register, the site is listed under number 710333 with 30.1 hectares of vines planted in the 2024 harvest year.
