Klosterberg

Location and classification

Klosterberg is the single-vineyard site of the Bermersheimer Klostergarten in the wine-growing area of Bermersheim in Bermersheim vor der Höhe. It belongs to the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, there to the sub-region of Bingen and to the grand cru of Adelberg.

Soils

The profile shows marl and pelosoil soils formed from calcareous, clayey tertiary marine deposits. They are deep, nutrient-rich and strongly calcareous; they allow water through only to a limited extent and make it difficult for the roots to penetrate. In addition, limestone and rendzina soils from tertiary marine deposits occur in the area of a calcareous algae reef. These are shallow to medium-depth, very calcareous, stony and sandy-loamy, and have good aeration and warming ability with limited depth of root penetration.

Wine style

On marl and pelosoil soils, full-bodied, dense and substantial wines are produced with moderate acidity, a creamy texture, and ripe fruit notes of mango, apricot and honeydew. The wines from limestone and rendzina soils are described as expressive, lively and aromatic, with balanced acidity and mineral chalky impressions; in addition, there are notes of citrus fruits, apple, gooseberry, mango and passion fruit.

Name and wine law

The name goes back to earlier church ownership. Klosterberg is listed in the wine sites directory of Rhineland-Palatinate as a legally recognised single-vineyard designation for the origin Rheinhessen. The site lies within the delimited protected designation of origin area of Rheinhessen.
