Location
The Kirchhalde, also known as the Birnauer Kirchhalde, lies near the Birnau pilgrimage church at the Birnau upper farm in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen. The vineyard is situated on the elevated slope above Lake Constance and falls steeply down to the lake.
Soil and History
The soils are strongly shaped by weathered moraine material. Viticulture around Birnau has been documented since the 13th century. The current area of vines at the Birnauer Kirchhalde was replanted with vines in the 1960s after being used as pasture and an orchard area.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Müller-Thurgau is documented for wines from the Birnauer Kirchhalde, including a dry vintage from 2010 and a wine from the 2013 vintage as VDP.Erste Lage. Both dry wines and a slightly sweeter, lower-alcohol style with residual sugar are documented.
Farming and Maturation
For 2010, production from organically farmed vineyard plots is documented. A Müller-Thurgau from the 2020 vintage was made from selected grapes, fermented in stainless steel, and matured on fine lees in stainless steel.
