Uhldingen-Mühlhofen

Location on Lake Constance

Uhldingen-Mühlhofen is located in Baden on the shore of Lake Constance in the Bodenseekreis district, at the mouth of the Seefelder Aach. The municipality was formed in 1972 through the merger of Mühlhofen, Oberuhldingen and Unteruhldingen.

Landscape and geology

The valley of the Seefelder Aach opens out in a funnel shape towards the lake. To the north and south, the terrain rises to wooded young moraine hills. Elevations range from the lake shore at 394.42 metres to 561.19 metres in the south-east. The valley is the outflow of a late-glacial meltwater channel to the former Überlingen ice-margin lake; south of Unteruhldingen, Upper Freshwater Molasse is exposed.

Vine cultivation on the Kirchhalde

The Kirchhalde is documented as the Birnau church hill (Birnauer Kirchhalde) on the Birnau Oberhof in Oberuhldingen. The Oberhof was acquired in 1211 by the Salem Abbey; afterwards, additional areas for winegrowing were added. In the 1960s, the Birnauer Kirchhalde was replanted with vines.

Grape varieties and vinification

For the Birnauer Kirchhalde, Müller-Thurgau and Spätburgunder are documented. A dry white wine made from Müller-Thurgau and a dry red wine made from Spätburgunder are documented. The vineyards were described in a technical wine guide from 2012 as being farmed organically; one Spätburgunder ripened in a large wooden cask.
