Location and classification
The Proschwitzer Katzensprung is an officially designated single-vineyard site within the Großlage Spaargebirge. The origin municipality is Proschwitz in Saxony.
Topography and soils
The south-facing vineyard area lies in the mild Elbe valley. Steep, partly terraced sections near the Katzenstufen receive strong sunshine. Dry-stone walls store heat. The soils have developed from weathered granite rock and, in the upper areas, are covered with loess or mixed with loess.
Cultivation and grape varieties
The area is farmed by numerous small-scale winegrowers as well as a few part-time businesses. Documented varieties include, among others, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Traminer, Riesling and Scheurebe. The cultivation conditions include aging vines, damaged dry-stone walls and stairways, an inadequate trellis wire system, lack of irrigation and difficult paths within the site.
New planting
On 19 April 2025, the Berggemeinschaft Am Katzensprung planted 1,000 vines on previously neglected land and renewed a small dry-stone wall. The new planting was intended for a local wine marketed as Weißburgunder Proschwitzer Katzensprung.
