Location and views
Proschwitz is a district of the town of Meißen, located to the north in Saxony. The vineyards above the Elbe valley can be reached via the Katzenstufen and offer views of Meissen’s Burgberg, the cathedral and the Albrechtsburg.
Wine-growing landscape
The vineyard Katzensprung is a legally registered single vineyard in the Meissen area of the Saxon wine-growing region and forms part of the Großlage Spaargebirge. It is connected with the Bocksberg as well as the steep slopes between Knorregrund and Heiligem Grund. Red granite, loess up to six metres thick and weathered syenite shape the described soil profile. Steep-slope viticulture and terracing are characteristic of the wine-growing landscape around Proschwitz and Meißen; for an observation plot in Katzensprung, Riesling has been documented.
History
The Proschwitz manor estate was first mentioned in 1380 and was run as a manor estate in 1696. The Lippe family, which owned Schloss Proschwitz with interruptions since the early 18th century, acquired vineyards between Meißen and Zadel and revived wine-growing there.
